I extemporize most of my vocals, often as I am hearing the song for the first time. I choose a song based on hearing just a few measures, then listening to the complete track I just open my face, and whatever falls out, is what you (and I) hear. I often have no idea what I am singing about until I mix my vocal track with the music. My goal is to create a complete take in a single run, though sometimes it takes more than one, or I try a totally different angle.
